Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 19, 2026 · Version: 1.0
Hi there 👋
I'm Eyner, the developer of Honoku. I built this app because I love books and I wanted a beautiful, simple way to track what I read. Your privacy matters to me — both as a developer and as a reader who also uses this app every day.
This page explains, in plain language, what information Honoku collects, how I use it, and what rights you have. There's also some legal language because, well, that's the world we live in — but I've tried to keep it readable.
— Eyner Córdova, Lima, Peru
📖 The short version
- Honoku collects only what's needed to make the app work.
- Your books, notes, and reading data belong to you.
- I don't sell your data. Ever.
- I don't show ads or share your info with advertisers.
- You can delete your account from inside the app anytime.
- Questions? Email me at soporte@honoku.app
1. Who's behind Honoku
Honoku is built and maintained by me, Eyner Córdova, an independent developer based in Lima, Peru. I'm a natural person, not a company. There's no big team, no investors, no marketing department — just one developer who loves books.
2. What this Policy covers
This Privacy Policy applies when you use the Honoku app for iOS. By using the app, you agree to how I handle your information as described here. If you'd rather not, that's totally fine — just don't use the app.
3. What information Honoku collects
Things you give me directly
| What | Why |
| Your name, email, and (optionally) a profile picture |
To create your account and let you log back in |
| Books you add, pages read, reading sessions, reviews, quotes, ratings |
This is the whole point of the app — tracking your reading |
| Book spending (if you choose to record it) |
So you can see how much you've spent on books |
| Photos of book covers you upload |
To show them in your library |
Things collected automatically
| What | Why |
| Device model and iOS version |
To make sure the app works on your device and to fix bugs |
| Which features you use and how often |
To understand what's working and what needs improvement |
| Subscription status (managed by Apple) |
To unlock Premium features if you've subscribed |
Things Honoku does NOT collect
To be completely transparent, here's what I never touch:
- Your GPS location
- Your contacts
- Your camera or photos (unless you explicitly add a book cover)
- Your financial details (Apple handles payments — I never see your card)
- Your microphone
- What you do outside Honoku — I have no idea, and I don't want to
- Advertising identifiers (IDFA) — I don't run ads
4. How I use this information
Pretty simply: I use your information to make the app work for you. That means:
- Showing you your library and reading history
- Letting you log in from different devices
- Syncing your data across your iPhone, iPad, and Mac (when available)
- Processing your Premium subscription through Apple
- Fixing bugs and making the app better
- Emailing you only if something important happens (security issue, big change to this policy)
One promise I'll always keep: Your data isn't a product. I don't sell it, rent it, or share it with advertisers. Honoku makes money from Premium subscriptions — that's it.
5. Third-party services I use
Like every modern app, Honoku relies on a few trusted partners to work. Here they are, in full transparency:
| Partner | What they do for Honoku | Their privacy policy |
| Apple |
The App Store, Sign in with Apple, payments, Live Activities |
Read |
| Google |
Sign in with Google (only if you choose this option) |
Read |
| RevenueCat |
Manages Premium subscriptions reliably |
Read |
| Hetzner |
Hosts the server (in Germany 🇩🇪) where your data lives |
Read |
I chose each of these because they have strong privacy practices. That said, each one has its own policy — I can't speak for them, only for Honoku.
6. Where your data lives, and how it's kept safe
Your data is stored on a server in Germany, hosted by Hetzner. Germany has some of the strictest privacy laws in the world (GDPR), so even though I'm based in Peru, your data gets European-level protection.
What I do to keep your data safe:
- All communication between the app and the server uses HTTPS encryption.
- Passwords are stored as cryptographic hashes (never in plain text).
- Backups happen regularly so nothing gets lost.
- Only I have access to the server, through SSH keys.
A bit of honesty
No system on the internet is 100% secure. I do my best, but if something terrible happens — like a sophisticated cyber attack — I can't be held responsible for things that genuinely fall outside my control. I will, however, do everything I can to notify you quickly and fix the problem.
7. How long I keep your data
As long as your account is active, your data stays around. The moment you delete your account:
- Your personal data gets deleted within 30 days.
- Anonymous statistics (which can't identify you) may stay around for general usage analysis.
- Some things might stay longer only if the law requires it (like tax records, for up to 5 years).
8. Your rights — you're in control
Whether the law that protects you is Peruvian (Law N° 29733) or European (GDPR), you have these rights:
- See your data — ask me for a copy
- Fix your data — correct anything wrong
- Delete your data — you can do this yourself from the app, anytime
- Take your data with you — get it in a standard format
- Say no — object to certain uses
- Pause processing — limit how I use it
- Change your mind — withdraw consent whenever you want
For any of these, just email soporte@honoku.app. I'll respond within 30 days at most — usually much faster.
To delete your account directly: open Honoku → Profile → "Delete my account". This is permanent, so make sure you're ready.
9. Kids and Honoku
Honoku is meant for readers 13 and older. I don't knowingly collect information from younger children. If you're between 13 and 18, you should check with a parent or guardian before signing up.
If you think a child under 13 has somehow created an account, please email me — I'll delete the account right away.
10. International data transfers
Since the server is in Germany (EU) and you might be anywhere in the world, your data crosses borders. Don't worry — the EU has very high data protection standards, and the transfer follows GDPR rules.
11. Cookies?
Honoku is a native iOS app, so it doesn't use cookies like a website would. It does store some things locally on your device (so the app works offline), but those stay on your device. Uninstalling the app removes them.
12. If this Policy changes
As Honoku grows, this Policy might need updates. Here's my promise:
- If something significant changes, I'll let you know in the app or by email, at least 30 days before it takes effect.
- Small fixes (typos, clarifications) just get updated on this page.
- The "Last updated" date at the top will always tell you when the latest version is from.
- If you keep using the app after a change, that means you're okay with the update.
13. Which laws apply
Legal stuff
Since I'm based in Lima, this Policy is governed by Peruvian law. If something ever needed to go to court, that would happen in Lima — unless consumer protection laws in your country say otherwise (which sometimes they do, and that's fine). Before going to court, we'd both agree to try to work things out directly first — give it 30 days of friendly conversation before bringing in lawyers.
14. About my responsibility
Legal stuff
I do my best to keep Honoku working well, but the app comes "as is" — I can't promise it'll always be bug-free or perfectly available. To the extent the law allows, I'm not responsible for indirect damages like lost data due to a major outage, hacks from external attackers, problems caused by third-party services (Apple, Google, RevenueCat, Hetzner), or things truly outside my control. That said, I'll always try to make things right if something goes wrong on my end.
